Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit: Bible Few topics generate more discussion than the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Everyone seems to know that this sin is unforgivable, but opinions differ widely as to what it is. Some say it is suicide, others that it is adultery, and still others think it refers to the rejection of the gospel after the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost. Almost no one stops to examine the contexts of the references to blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. As with all other matters, disciplined and careful analysis of the text clarifies the confusion. Unfortunately, many religious people have developed the habit of resolving issues without even looking at the text, much less study it carefully. The relevant texts are found in the first three Gospels. In Matthew 12, Jesus' statements about blaspheming against the Holy Spirit took place when he healed a man whose possession by the devil had made him blind and dumb. In Mark 3, the cure is not mentioned, but most of what Jesus said on the occasion is. Luke records the healing in Chapter 11 and mentions the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost at 12 "9 But he who denies me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man you will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. "                                   Context
"So they brought him a demon-possessed, blind and dumb: and he healed him, so the dumb to speak and see. And all the people were amazed and said, Is this not the Son of David? But the Pharisees heard it murmured: This is not only expels demons by Beelzebub, the prince of demons "(Matthew 12:22-24)). Note three things. First, Jesus healed a man who was blind and mute. There are simply impressive in the way Matthew recorded the miracle: he simply said that the man spoke and saw. Second, the crowd saw what Jesus did and began to conclude that he could be the Son of David, that is, the Messiah. Third, the Pharisees heard what people were saying and decided that they had to find a radical plan to quell the influence of Jesus. They accused him of casting out devils by the power of Satan. They were trying to neutralize the effect of the miracles of Jesus and stop others from believing it. This was a brilliant move by the enemies of Jesus as not only explained his great works, but cast a shadow of suspicion over him. It was imperative for him to answer the charge against them convincingly.
  The Defense of Jesus. "But Jesus, knowing their thoughts said: Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against itself
; how then will his kingdom stand? And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, is certainly The kingdom of God upon you. Or how can anyone enter the house and plunder his property without first tying him? And then he will plunder his house "(Matthew 12:25-29).
Jesus answered with three points. First, he showed that it was illogical to think that Satan was fighting with himself. It is hard to imagine that the devil could be so foolish. Few seek to hurt themselves, and those who probably do not survive for long. If, indeed, the devil had started to attack itself and its own servants, so everyone could stop worrying about him, because his kingdom would soon disappear. Second, the Pharisees questioned Jesus about the others who were casting out devils. He was probably referring to people whom he had given the power to expel demons (see Matthew 10:1, Luke 9:49-50, 10:1, 17). Many of these were probably the sons of the Pharisees themselves. While they might foolishly accuse Jesus of casting out devils in alliance with the devil, surely they would not be saying the same of their own children. Finally, Jesus showed how his expulsion of demons was part of the kingdom. Jesus' mission was to take people from Satan. Come before him, Satan could, because of sin, declare that all men were his property. Jesus came to forgive our sins and thus "steal" the devil those souls that he had considered their possessions. In order to rob the house of a brave, however, we need to first tie it, before taking his property. This is what Jesus was doing when he cast out demons. He was tying up Satan so that he could take the souls that had been under the control of the devil. This was a conflict between two kingdoms. Jesus, freeing men from the demonic realm, was demonstrating that its sovereignty was superior to that of Satan.      The Warning of Jesus "who is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. So I say to you, every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of Man, you will be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven, neither in this world nor in the future "(Matthew 12:30-32). Here, Jesus warned of the need to decide which side to be. War makes neutrality impossible. We have to serve Jesus or Satan.  Jesus also warned about the danger of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. We know that Jesus casting out demons by the power of the Holy Spirit: "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then is the kingdom of God come upon you" (Matthew 12:28). Then, when they were accused of expelling demons by Beelzebub, the demon king, they were blaspheming the Holy Spirit, the true power through which these great things were running. They not only witnessed the human form of Jesus, they saw a demonstration of the Holy Spirit. It could have been forgiven for having failed to recognize him as a man, but since God had put his Spirit within him (Matthew 12:18), they had no excuse.     Connect these statements about the danger of blaspheming the Holy Spirit with the next point that Jesus said: "Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or the tree bad and its fruit corrupt: for the fruit the tree is known. Brood of Vipers , how can you speak good things, being evil? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full. A good man draws good things from the treasury, but the bad man of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. I tell you that every careless word that men shall speak, they shall give account on Judgement Day, For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned "(Matthew 12:33-37). Jesus was showing that the issue of blasphemy is much more serious than mere words themselves. What we say reveals what we are. If one examines the contents of the bucket, you know what is in the deep pit. If one examines the words that are spoken, he knows what is in the heart. Words are signs of character. This is not only true of the words of blasphemy, as is also true words of confession. Paul wrote: "If with your mouth confess Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart, you believe that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation "(Romans 10:9-10). Not that the words in themselves, have some magical power, superstitious, but the words show something deeper about us.      When the accusers of Jesus accused him of casting out devils by the devil, showed a deep hardness of heart. As the man spoke and saw, so the enemies saw the Spirit cast out demons and speak against it. They were so hardened against the truth that could actually witness the wonderful miracles and holiness of Jesus and still accuse him without hesitation, to be allied with the devil. They were extremely corrupt and blind. While others could be forgiven blasphemy, blasphemy against Jesus showed them a degree of spiritual toughness that could make it impossible for them to repent. The problem here is their problem, not God. God has unlimited capacity to forgive anyone who seeks, but these people had no heart to pick it up. Therefore,they would never be forgiven.      Practical Lessons.  Consider three practical thoughts. First, Jesus demonstrated a remarkable ability to overcome objections. He calmly answered each complaint and the answer combined with an important teaching. He never got frustrated, but always answered perfectly. Second, miracles do not change the enemies of Jesus. They were incorrigible. We can also develop hardened hearts. Today, some think they would believe if only they could see Jesus physically alive on earth again, and witness a great display of power. They saw it, but this had no effect. The fact that many today reject Jesus is because of their hardened hearts, not because of insufficient evidence. Finally, consider the importance of the things we say. We are responsible for our words and deeds. What we say and do reflects our true nature. There is nothing that comes out of our mouth that was not before in our mind. We must watch our language and our hearts.
